CyanogenMod Beta 1 for the Epic 4G Touch

After months of waiting, code changes, debugging and many experimental builds, the moment you all have been waiting for is finally here. Team Epic and CM are proud to announce CyanogenMod 9 Beta 1 for the Samsung Epic 4G Touch.

Release Notes
  • A lot has changed since our last release, Alpha 6. Since then, our device has undergone many changes to comply with official CM standards.
  • We now share a common kernel and proprietaries with the rest of the gs2 family. This means that anytime our int'l brothers get  a kernel update, so do we. This also helps greatly with getting official CM device status.
  • Big thanks to UberPinguin for completely rewriting a new RIL for our device. This helps with all things mobile connectivity.

Be sure to verify the md5sum to be sure you got the right one.

Changelog
  • Latest CM9 upstream code.
  • Verified safe recovery. You don't have to worry about bricking when wiping/flashing if you are using the included kernel/recovery with the ROM zip.
  • The epic4gtouch is now known as the d710 in compliance with other gs2 and samsung device naming conventions.
  • Opensource sensor hal and lights library.
  • Reconfigured storage to actually work with swapping and cwm backup.
  • Our device now uses smdk-common kernel and proprietaries which helps with official CM status.
  • New RIL by UberPinguin which helps all things mobile connectivity. Read here for more info.
  • Fixed and overhauled advanced settings (screen, sensors, haptic, and dock settings).
  • Improved GPS configuration.
  • Improved touchpanel sensitivity.
  • Improved battery life and less wake locks.
  • Improved storage mounting in CWM.
  • Mostly all features and settings working with only a few quirks.
  • Closer and closer to official CM device status.

  1. I've been waiting for a low-risk release before attempting this. Is it finally time?

  2. Just an FYI, I downloaded the file using link #1 and Chrome was telling me that it though it was a possible malicious file or phishing attempt. I've never had it tell me that for other any of the other alpha's or experimentals. Not sure why it thought it was this time. I just ignored it and checked the MD5 and it's ok, but may need to look into that so others don't get confused or scared away from it. I'm running Chrome(21.0.1180.89) on a Windows 8 RTM PC.

  3. Can I dirty flash this over a nightly or does it have to be a clean install?

    1. Nandroid and then try flashing over it. If something breaks, restore the nandroid image.

I'd do the testing for you, but I'm planning on backing all my apps up with Titanium and starting from scratch.

    2. Rob did you did you flash it over a nightly without having to do a data reset?

    3. I flashed over a nightly. Worked fine. No resets or wipes required.

  4. Does it matter if I'm currently on the official ICS FH13? This would be my first time attempting anything like this on any of my Android phones.

    1. After rooting and installing CWM, you've gotta wipe /data (wouldn't hurt to blow out /system either). Regardless, be sure to:

1). use Titanium Backup or MyBackup to backup all your apps/data and settings.
2). Make a nandroid backup before wiping anything.
3). When flashing CWM for the first time, make sure it's a patched version that fixes the EMMC bug. Otherwise, you might brick your phone. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/hard-brick-bug-on-galaxy-s-ii-and-note-leaked-ics-kernels/

      Good luck.

  5. How do I start from scratch? I currently have Alpha6 installed but would mind wiping everything. How do I delete everything? Thanks,

    1. Reboot to recovery
Wipe data (factory reset), cache, and advanced-dalvik cache
Flash the .zip and GAPPS from the above post
      Reboot
      Profit

    2. Choose the wipe options when you're in recovery right before you flash the zip.

    1. Add agat into the PDA option of odin. and make sure your phone is in download mode: (vol down + power)
Get into agat recovery using vol up + power

  7. I... Love you guys.

  8. Seriously the easiest thing I've done on my phone.

    Install AGAT recovery.
    Make a nandroid backup.
    Reboot.
    Open ROM Manager
    Install ROM from SDCard.
    Wipe Data+Cache and Wipe Dalvik
    OK

    Automated from there.

  9. If I just flash this over CM9a6, what, if anything, will I lose? Will I have to install anything again? What settings might get reverted?

      Nothing - at least I didn't ...

  10. Thanks for the first Beta!
I flashed it over 09-01 nightly with the nightly's CWM6 recovery (without wiping/resetting) and it upgraded like a charm.
Even the GPS seems to work now.
Thanks again and keep up the great work!

  11. The mount points changed names. I ran into the same problem.

Just tap on Menu -> Preferences and change the backup directory. In there is an option to scan your whole phone for the backup directory.

  12. Is anyone else having awful battery life with this? The late August nightlies were much easier on the battery.

    1. Great battery here. did you full wipe?

      Delete
    2. No I didn't, I haven't fully wiped since alpha 3. Don't really understand why I'd have to considering the nightlies were flashed without wiping and they had better battery.

Maybe it's because there's no hotplug or lulz governors in this; just Pegasusq.

If I'm going to wipe i may as well go to Jelly Bean but i don't want to deal with titanium backups not fully restoring everything.

  13. I had to revert to a backup. For some reason USB storage no longer worked. Then there's the change from internal/external storage (something to do with this, not sure exactly what) that was a bit odd.

  14. Great job guys! Is there a way to increase call volume during a call when the screen is off? Is there a setting I'm not seeing for the volume rocker to wake the phone so it makes this possible? Thank you!

    1. Nevermind. Found it. System settings -> Display -> Wake Up Options. Sweet.

  16. I want to flash in the worse way. But im afraid that my pioneer head unit wont like the idea of flashing. Does this support MHL port cables??

  17. Hey guys love your work all im worried about is battery life whats you guys expirience? would it get me through a whole day?

  18. This beta is so awesome! I was using mijjz goodness roms for the longest until i saw this (which released on my bday tyvm!)

I havent found any issues that hinder my daily usage (and i've been using it since 9/6 at this point)

As for battery life.. just as good as any other ics rom. Now if you pair it up with juice defender ultimate (properly configured) you should be solid for 24-48 hrs.

As for mhl .. thats the only thing I havent been able to get working.. no biggie though.. that kills your battery anyhow

  19. was the voicemail bug fixed in this release? I was on alpha 6 then wen to try the CM10 released by one of the authors of this rom, while it is definetely coming along, it was not near the "every day" status that this cm9 is. It freezes ALOT, the alphas for it were better but there were a few issues with sound as well as editing text in the browser that made it unusable. Great work so far though! Can I nandroid back and then update? or should i just fresh install?

    ReplyDelete
  20. A few bugs. When listening to music, and a text comes in, the music volume lowers, but never comes back up. You have to lower/increase the volume to get it back up.
Second bug, my 3G is almost useless. Being that I'm on boost mobile, I have no 4G. I can barely load a mobile Facebook page.
Third and final (for now), when the capacitive buttons time out, they stay off for about three seconds, then light up again for whatever your time out is, then back off and stays off till you interact with the phone again.

These are BUGS, not due to the user's inability to work the phone but the rom itself. I'm not an idiot.

  22. Hey, guys -- it's been a good month and a half since the last status update, and while I appreciate the work you're doing, I'd also appreciate a quickly-written blog post to let me know that you haven't given up, every once in a while. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, I just want to know, so I don't get tempted to go find another ROM.

  23. at this point, i have to assume the project is closed.

  24. Like some previous posters I would like to know if this project is still alive.
I just checked the nightlies link and there are still some in November at least intil 11/12.
Thanks for all your hard work and I am hoping there will be some more activity again.
    Cheers!

    1. Yeah, I just found that. It seems to be the same people... they just never touched the facebook or the g+ or the blog, because, really, everybody in the world uses XDA as their primary social network anyway, right?
